A New Year is like a blank page we can fill with whatever we choose. We’re motivated and determined that this is our year!
We decide on our goals whole-heartedly believing we can do this.
But then a week or two pass, our enthusiasm begins to wane and we tuck our sweet goals away in a drawer or in the back of our minds never to look at them again.
Eleven months later we wonder why we’re not masters of manifestation and vow never to set a goal again.
I don’t know about you, but I did this for years!
Then I learned the secret to reaching goals. It’s one simple word …
If you want to reach a goal you must keep it at the forefront of your mind. This means you must think about it, talk about it and be excited about it!
Marc Allen, a wonderful person, artist and the founder of New World Library, a publishing house with wildly successful books including The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle and Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain, is one of the greatest people at manifesting goals I know.
In his 20’s Marc was admittedly lost, broke and hadn’t a clue how to change his situation.
Then, on his 30th birthday, he created a list of everything he wanted to experience in his life.
Since that day Marc’s kept a running list of his ideal life and continues to check off goals including founding a well-respected, successful company, being a best-selling author, becoming a millionaire (and then some!), having a healthy and happy family, traveling the world, even living in a big white house on a hill he always dreamed of.
Marc Allen isn’t alone. Many successful artists, entrepreneurs, politicians and leaders credit their success to writing out and focusing on their goals.
If you’re determined to reach your goals this year, here are 5 simple tips for focusing:
1. Know what you want.
Get crystal clear on your goals and figure out what you really want. And not what society (or your mother!) says you should want. If you need help getting clear try this simple exercise.
2. Take pen to paper and list everything you’d like to experience this year.
Turn each goal into an affirmation:
Instead of, Lose 10 pounds. – make it – I am (insert goal weight) and look and feel great!
Instead of, Sell 10,000 copies of my book – make it – I am selling 10,000 copies of my book with ease.
You get the picture. 😉
3. Read this list to yourself out loud two times daily.
Set your alarm for twice a day to go through your list of goals. I go through mine in the morning and evening. As you read through your goals let yourself feel excited about them.
4. If you have many goals focus on no more than three at a time.
As awesome as we all are it’s impossible to focus on too many things at the same time.
Break yearly goals down into quarters, then months, then into weekly action steps to reach them.
Give these action steps your undivided attention.
I’ll admit, the past couple of years multi-tasking has gotten the best of me.
In trying to do everything at once I lost focus and not only felt overwhelmed, but like I didn’t get anything done – even if I worked a solid day.
That’s why these days I’m setting a timer to help me focus 100% on one task at a time. (I have one set right now!)
What’s important is I devote my FULL attention to the single task in front of me until the timer goes off, unless I finish early.
I close my email, turn off my phone, close all web browsers, social media pages and anything else that could distract me. (As much as possible that is, I have quite the mischievous puppy!)
I also set an intention.
5. Focus on the Positive
What we focus our attention on grows.
When comparing where you are to where you want to be, give your attention to how far you’ve come, not how far there is to go.
Congratulate yourself on every step you’ve taken. Even baby steps.
Reaching goals takes courage, patience, tenacity and focus. It also takes a positive outlook!
Focus on what you want to experience, stay excited about what the year will bring and enjoy the journey.
Remember, you can do anything you set your mind to.
To a spectacular 2016!
