No matter what’s on our to-do list, the most important thing we can accomplish in any day is being good to ourselves.
This doesn’t mean we have to spend hours at a spa or big bucks on a fancy dinner. I’m talking about simple things we can all do that will make a huge difference in our days and lives.
Here are 10 Daily Musts to be Good to Ourselves:
1. Make Happiness a Priority
Seek out laughter and whatever makes you feel good. Limit bad news and drama.
When it comes to being informed get the facts and get on with your day. No good comes from obsessing over anything negative.
2. Don’t Talk Smack about Yourself
Use your words to praise and build yourself up, not break yourself down. This goes for what you think too. Speak and think good things about yourself.
3. Be your Own Best Friend
When our best friends are down or feel they’ve made a mistake we don’t plant seeds of worry in their minds, scare or judge them. We assure them everything is going to be OK and remind them they’re amazing and will bounce back in time.
We celebrate their triumphs when things are good, support them when they’re feeling down and unconditionally love them either way.
It’s easy to do it for them, so why wouldn’t we do it for ourselves?
4. Nix the Comparing
Whether it’s social media or face-to-face, the true negative of comparing and thinking things like, “Why can’t I be like that?” or “Why don’t I have that?” is we’re not honoring who we are.
We’re all living our own lives, going our own speed. We’re all on our own paths, doing it our own way and are exactly where we’re supposed to be.
5. Make “Me Time”
It’s impossible to be ‘on’ all of the time and we all need timeouts to refuel.
Whether it’s a mini-meditation sitting in your car before walking in the door after work, an afternoon sipping lattes at a café, or an entire weekend holed up in your home make time for you.
Put it in your weekly calendar as non-negotiable.
6. Be Kind and Patient with YOU
Most of us are terribly hard on ourselves. We criticize, judge, berate and place unreasonable expectations on our day-to-day lives. We expect to conquer the world in a day and get down on ourselves when we don’t.
Take it easy on yourself. Life’s a marathon, not a sprint.
Remember, great things do take time.
7. Leave the Past in the Past
“Resentment is like drinking poison and expecting it to kill your enemy.”
I don’t know who originally said this but I love it. (It’s been attributed to Nelson Mandela, Carrie Fischer and an unknown from an Alcoholic Anonymous meeting.)
We often think we’re punishing the person who hurt us, getting even with them, or demonstrating love by still being affected by what’s been done. But the only person we hurt by holding onto anger and upsets is ourselves.
Let. It. Goooo... It’s time to move onwards and upwards.
8. Do your Body Good
Eat healthy and sitting down. Hydrate with H2O throughout the day. Honor sleep and rest to allow your body to heal when you’re run down.
Listen to your body, it’ll tell you what it needs.
9. Be Grateful
Throughout the day find and focus on things to be grateful for. When we focus our attention on what’s going well and is working more good always shows up.
No matter how rough it gets there’s always something to be grateful for.
10. Take it Easy and Enjoy
Laugh with yourself. Make having fun a priority.
Try not to get worked up about anything you know won’t matter a year from now. Life’s a journey … relax and enjoy the ride!
