In 2005, Steve Jobs addressed the graduating class of Stanford University telling them, “For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? And whenever the answer has been ‘no’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.”

When choosing a career these days, the most important thing to consider is what we love doing.

Why?

1.) Passion’s what we’re here to experience. It gives us a sense of purpose and is imperative to our health and vitality.

Doing things we have passion for fills us with enthusiasm and give us a sense of fulfillment. They take us away from everything else and make us lose track of time in the best way.

Besides, when we do what we love and believe in the money eventually follows.

2.) Decades back people typically worked 35-hour weeks (and everyone took lunch breaks) so it wasn’t a big deal if they didn’t love what they did because they had plenty of time outside of work to indulge passions.

These days a job isn’t just a “job” anymore. It’s a way of life.

9-10 hour days and eating lunch at our desks is the new norm. Thanks to email and Smartphones even when nights and weekends roll around we never really get away.

The thing is, we’re not meant to feel anxiety Sunday evening knowing the next day we have to be somewhere we don’t really want to be. We aren’t meant to wake in the morning feeling like a slave to another day.

We are meant to do what we love, every single day!

For some of us, changing our job situations doesn’t seem an option. We have student loans to be paid off, mortgages, or children to provide for. Many of us are grateful just to have a job.

But considering the majority of us will be working for 40-50 years (more than half of our lives!) take small steps now to turn doing what you love into a reality in your future.

The ancient Greeks didn’t write obituaries they just asked one question when a person died. Did she have passion?

Passion is what fuels us. It’s what makes us jump out of bed in the morning and give thanks for being alive.

Feed your passions. Follow them. Life’s too short to spend time on anything you don’t care about.
